We here at The Artful Yarn are always on the lookout for projects with new and exciting techniques. One of those techniques is steeking. A steek is a narrow panel of extra stitches connecting two pieces of fabric. When the knitting is complete, the extra stitches are reinforced and the two pieces are cut. It may seem counter-intuitive to knit in the round just to cut, but stranded colorwork is a lot easier to knit in the round because the design is always facing you and there is no purling!
Are you intrigued by steeking, but nervous about giving it a try? Then the Sheepy Steeky Coasters project, designed by Michele Bernstein, is the introduction you didn’t know you were waiting for. The colorwork pattern, knit in the round, makes two coasters at the same time, and there are not many stitches to reinforce. The pattern includes a detailed photo tutorial on reinforcing and cutting your steek, and finishing the edges. You’ll gain confidence and have cute coasters to show for your perseverance.
Instructor: Linda Schaefer
What You Need:
2 skeins of Woolstok Worsted makes 4 coasters on one US size 7 16” circular needle
Pattern available for purchase on Ravelry
